The Gates Opened

May 6th, 2003

Been a day full of severe thunderstorm, flash flood and tornado watches and warnings. Got to hear the tornado warning siren blare, which was kinda cool (I always had a twisted curiosity about its sound). I was basically trapped at my house for a few hours when Baxter Street flooded. Centuries later and Athens still has streets only wide enough for horses and buggies and a drainage system fit for Flagstaff. Bless the planning forsight of our myopic county commission.

What Matters

March 18th, 2003

Whenever the country is in great danger, it is always comforting to know the local electronic media will be right on top of important issues like “how early do I need to get to the airport today?”

In The News

March 18th, 2003

**WARNING: THIS WILL INTEREST NO ONE**
Saw an unexpected big story on the news this morning. The every five minutes or so traffic updates kept talking about the addition of a traffic light at GA 211 and Rockwell Church Road. Well, I must say, that’s only about 20 years overdue. This should greatly reduce the number of traffic accidents in Barrow County.

It’s True… But Sad

March 7th, 2003

Man, just when WWE appeared to be moving in the right direction, they get just about the worst news imaginable. Kurt Angle needs major neck surgery, and with recovery time, will probobly miss at least a year. So, no more ***** matches, no more entertaining interviews, no more superstar making everyone he steps in the ring with look like gold, no more Wrestlemania XIX match with Brock Lesner. He truley has been the MVP of the indstry the past couple of years, and he will be sorely missed. Hope he comes back better than ever. At least he’ll get to let his hair grow back out.

sports and tv

March 7th, 2003

You know those moments when you realize you’re are just a sicko sports fan? Like spending two hours watching HS girl’s basektball. I mean one team only scored five freaking points in the first quarter, it was just painful to watch, but I sat through it all… even the overtime.

Odd trend

Before “Training Day” was released, I don’t recall ever seeing a black guy drive a Monte Carlo. But now this is a several times a day occurance. Movies are a powerful force indeed.

Looking Back On Columbia

February 5th, 2003

It took me a few days to get to this because I didn’t feel like I had anything original or thought provoking to say. However, it dawned on me this morning why this event had such a different feel than many national tradgedies — it happened on a Saturday. That may seem odd, but when thinking back (no actual research was done) I could recall very few national tragedies occuring during the weekend. The Columbia disaster didn’t have many of the standard cliches of a horiffic event — people finding out at work and huddling into the confernce room to watch television, then leaving their jobs to rush over to the school to pull their children out of class and tell them. And because of all of this, people had to deal with the Columbia explosion in a more personal way, at their homes, with their families. It’s a smaller support group, fewer people to grieve with, share emotion, thoughts and fears with. And for those of us that live alone, just sitting their like a zombie flipping from news channel to news channel, network to network, soaking it all in. Feeling the emotions, but also feeling kinda awkward about calling someone at 10 AM on Saturday to talk about it. And the news coverage, there was another effect of a major weekend story. On Saturday morning, most station don’t have their ace reporters and anchors in the studio. When the story was breaking, you could definately tell the JV squad was doing the coverage as they rushed their all-stars to the studios and locations. Here’s hoping you and your have come to grips with this event in your own personal way.
